Abstract
This paper presents results from the rapidly developing field of microfluidics. The simulation of a continuous flow rapid mixing device is introduced to highlight the challenges involved in modelling the complex geometries, physics and chemistry of microfluidic systems. The simulations were performed using THOR, a parallel three-dimensional multi-block flow solver. Our results indicate the presence of a recirculation zone in the mixing region that will trap some of the reacting fluid. This fluid is subsequently released into the main flow at a later time, with potential implications when interpreting the reaction kinetics.
