Abstract
Composite conductors in which the superconducting filaments are below a certain diameter should be free from flux - jumping, and should enable reliable undegraded coil performance to be achieved at a high overall current density. Detailed theoretical and experimental studies are in progress, and this interim report summarises the present position. Two distinct theoretical criteria for absence of flux-jumping are presented, together with criteria for the required rate of twist or transposition in a multifilament composite. The experimental programme designed to confirm these criteria is outlined, and some of the results so far obtained are summarised.
