Abstract
Caustic theory has been applied to electron trajectories in particle accelerators and has been used to describe current spike formation in bunch compressors. Current spike development is sensitive to small changes in the initial longitudinal phase space distribution and longitudinal dispersion (R56, T566 and U5666) of bunch compressors. The caustic theory can be used to describe current horn formation and suppression in chicane compression schemes, or for increasing peak current in arc-like compression schemes. In this paper we show how current spikes develop in the MAX IV bunch compressors from small changes in pre-BC1 accelerating phase and BC1 sextupole strength. The analysis is supported by results from experiment.
