Title
Pulsed superconducting magnets, and the possibility of an inexpensive conversion of Nimrod to 50GeV
Contributors
PF Smith (SRC Rutherford Laboratory)
Abstract
The basic difficulties of designing pulsed high field magnets with a slow rise time can in principle be overcome by the use of high field superconductors. In the particular case of alternating gradient synchrotron magnets, the overall cost if found to compare favourably with conventional iron-core and low temperature air-core pulsed magnets. Eddy current and A.C losses can be reduced to a tolerable level by careful design of superconducting cable. The calculations suggest the possibility of a relatively inexpensive 50 GeV accelerator utilising the Nimrod power supply and injector.
