Title
Strong Field QED and Beyond Standard Model Physics Searches with Laser-Electron Beam Interactions
Contributors
M Radford (Cockcroft Inst., and Liverpool Univ.)
Abstract
The collision of relativistic electrons with high intensity laser pulses cannot be fully described by a perturbative application of quantum electrodynamics (QED). This is due to the high electric field within the laser pulse which interacts strongly with the electrons. Interactions of this strength must be accounted for without the use of perturbation theory and one must therefore turn to a non-perturbative approach to QED known as strong-field quantum electrodynamics (SFQED). SFQED has benefited from recent theoretical efforts to develop it into a useful theory for high-field physics. However SFQED has not yet been subjected to the same high level of experimental scrutiny to which perturbative QED has been with such success. It is important that SFQED continues to develop theoretically and gain the agreement of experiment so that high field phenomena can be well understood. To this end a two part experimental campaign is proposed which would study classical and quantum non-linearity of the electric field at Daresbury laboratory. These two forms of non-linearity are distinct and both together characterise the strong-field regime of QED. The experimental campaign proposed in this thesis is justified by a detailed simulation campaign that shows that radiation reaction, pair production and even the production of beyond standard model (BSM) particles such as axions could be studied at Daresbury Laboratory.
