Title ARCHER2-eCSE04-1 Project Report: Green multi-rotor systems: a pre-exascale multi-code framework for rotor-resolved analysis and design of floating wind farm and multi-propeller electrical aircraft propulsion
Contributors
Abstract The project aim is to develop a pre-exascale framework for blade-geometry resolved computational fluid dynamics analyses (CFD) of open multi-rotor systems, such as floating offshore wind farms and propeller-based distributed electric propulsion systems, coupling the open-source code OpenFOAM and ARCTIC CFD codes through the Multiscale Universal Interface library. These simulations exploit the strongest points of both codes. In this project, we developed a coupled framework for both steady and unsteady state simulations with both one-to-one and one-to-many coupled instances. Test cases show smooth and continuous flow fields across the coupled boundaries. A scaling test has been performed by using the flow past four cylinders case leading to 180M cells in total. It shows good scalability when the MPI tasks go from 96 to 1,536.
