Abstract USE was an experiment to investigate the construction and performance of a software support environment installed on the UNIVERSE wide-area network. The support environment managed the use of software engineering tools distributed over the network and provided a user with a database to be used in conjunction with the tools. The experiment was a qualified success - the environment was installed on UNIVERSE but its availability thereafter was curtailed by network problems.
