Abstract	HSL_OF01 is a Fortran 95 package that provides read/write facilities for one or more direct-access files through a single in-core buffer, so that actual input-output operations are often avoided. We describe the design of HSL_OF01 and comment on its use within an out-of-core sparse direct symmetric solver.
