Title Detection of Martensitic Transformation by Neutron Diffraction in 0.25%C TRIP Steel
Abstract Enhanced ductility in TRIP steel is due to the stress-induced martensitic transformation of autenite. The martensite acts as an elastic peg and increases work hardening. The present study aimed to examine this point, by observing the transformation by neutron diffraction during straining and assessing work hardening in subsequent deformation. 0.5%C steel plates, produced by a special heat treatment and having 20% retained austenite, were used in the study. Stress-induced transformation occurred gradually in room temperature deformation and a half of the austenite remained after15% strain at room temperature. Deformation at a low temperature enhanced the transformation more efficiently. For example, after only 8% strain at -50C and -100C the austenite disappeared. The transformation at these temperatures occurred even during a macroscopically elastic regime significantly. The slope of the stress-strain relationship in this regime was dramatically smaller than Young's modulus. Prestraining at -50C to induce martensite increased the work hardening rate in subsequent deformation at room temperature.
