Title
STAVE, Strain Tensor Analysis and Visualization Environment; a standalone application for the analysis of strain tensors derived from lattice parameter data
Contributors
AD Fortes (STFC Rutherford Appleton Lab.)
Abstract
STAVE (Strain Tensor Analysis and Visualization Environment) is a standalone, GUI-based Python application designed for analysis of crystal strain tensors from lattice parameter data collected as a function of some environmental variable (e.g., temperature, pressure), or else from lattice parameters of two different forms of the same material under equivalent conditions (spontaneous strain). Equally, users may fit models to their data in an external package and generate input for tensor derivation and analysis in STAVE. STAVE offers a user-friendly interface, full uncertainty propagation using Monte Carlo methods, 2D plotting of strain tensor coefficients, generation of 3D tensor representation glyphs, including a selection of slice views, and export of high-quality graphics, stereo images, movies and 3D meshes. This paper presents the mathematical background, code implementation details, and examples to highlight the application's scientific utility both as a research and learning tool.
